About
Trying to explain what I study by disciplinary categories is nearly impossible, hence the long list of research interests. What I look at, however, is one broad area with a focused perspective: I'm interested in the perspective of performers and composers in how music-making is done. I'm particularly interested in how this gets mediated and in our contemporary world this means the role of media and technology.
I am a performer and scholar who absolutely requires both performing and teaching to produce good scholarship. I currently teach as Adjunct Lecturer of Sociology at Indiana University Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI) as well as an Adjunct Instructor for Ivy Tech Community College in Communications, Life Skills and in Music. I have had plays I've written publicly presented though I predominantly write nonfiction essays when I'm not writing scholarly work. As a performer I act, do performance art that combines theater and movement, and play both piano and clarinet. I have been known to play klezmer and mariachi, a combination that rather accurately reflects my eclectic palate, and when I have time I make documentary films and music videos and produce/stage manage shows and events.
